A group of aspiring photographers with disabilities is out to prove the adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" though photographic art that provides a better understanding of their perspectives and worldview, in a new exhibit this September at the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts New Deal Gallery.
On Thursday, September 13, nine participants from The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming will present their photographs at the opening of an exhibit entitled "A Different Point of View," 5-7pm at the gallery, 4 Murray Hill Drive in Mount Morris.
The show will be on display through September 27 during regular gallery hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 11am-5pm; Thursday, 11am-7pm; and Saturday, 11am-3pm. Participants of the Different Point of View project captured the sights and nuances of Letchworth State Park, Vitale Park, and surrounding areas, using adaptive equipment where needed. They were supported by Arc staff, volunteers, and professional photographer Larry Tetamore, of Tetamore Photographic. The result: an exploration of an art form that, for some, had not been physically accessible until the project. "It gives the individuals an opportunity to show others what they think is beautiful and interesting," organizer Mary Coniglio says. "They get to showcase their work and become more than just a person with disabilities. I love seeing the pride on their faces when people 'ooh and ah' over the beautiful photographs.
